Community Farmers Market- Green is the New Black

On Friday, June 22nd, Community Markets will open the New Rochelle Farmers Market with the promise of an essential word: local. Throughout the season, shoppers can buy directly from farmers and food producers, who are all “local”, meaning they travel “to market and back in a day.”

The New Rochelle Farmers Market will kick off its 4th season with a ribbon cutting by community advocates at 10:30 am on opening day. Throughout the season, shoppers can explore a range of activities, including cooking demonstrations, kids’ events, music, and more. Some weeks will also feature the Community Table, a venue for local businesses and organizations to talk about their work in and around New Rochelle. On Friday June 22nd we welcome back the New Rochelle Farmers Market. This community outdoor market  started in 2009 and is brought to you by the City of New Rochelle. Located on the Library Green near Huguenot and Lawton avenue on Friday's from 8am- 3pm rain or shine.
                                                 

 The market vendors sell baked goods, fruits, herbs, vegetables and specialty foods. The community market website offers countless recipes for the healthy heart inclined. When is the last time you had  fresh turnips, radishes, beets, honey or cider? I suggest that you mark your calendar for the opening of Community Markets; It's either you will be there or you wilt.

Take a stroll down Main street and make a quick left on Lawton avenue for trip to Peru. The owner, Gino, is like a Peruvian Ricardo Montalban. Slide into one of the garnet colored chairs an escape to  fantasy island for epicurean tastes.  From his accent to the inflection in his voice Gino lives and breathes Peru. He does not stray far from the food of his youth. His mother  Elizabeth, is toiling away in the kitchen just as she did when Gino was a boy.

 Wall art is a staple in Downtown New Rochelle restaurants an Cholo's is no exception. The Peruvian art reflects the different regions of his beloved country which plays as a photo-book of sorts. When you go, and I know you will; ask for a recommendation or soup of the day. The fish is fresh (sea) The art is sublime (see) And every thing on the menu is a thumbs up (sí)

Backstreet Gallery- All that Glitters

Located on picturesque Lawton Avenue, is the Backstreet Gallery.  Ivar Hayden, the master framer with 35 years experience, has the perfect setting for a gallery. The intimate space has high ceilings and an artist mural on the exterior of the building. Enter and the neutral colored walls create the ideal canvas for an artist to showcase their work. Today Hilary Zelson was showing pieces from her  Dripping in Glitter collection.  For the pieces she used glitter on canvas in lieu of paint.

The room was abuzz with local art aficionados including New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson. While guests nibbled on gourmet appetizers and sipped champagne, Ivar worked the room engaging patrons in conversation. After 30 minutes one could easily forget that they are in New Rochelle and not SoHo.
